J&J Cultural Competence Project

The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) and Johnson & Johnson have partnered together for a Cultural Competence Project to develop resources to train physicians and enhance current efforts in the medical education curriculum through key topics, thought leaders, and references to improve quality care for Hispanics and other minority populations in the United States.

On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 1PM to 2PM EST, NHMA hosted our Increasing Physicians and Medical Education Roundtable. Our speakers discussed their experiences as Latino physicians, the importance of workforce diversity, the value of being a Spanish speaking provider, and highlighted the significance of National Latino Physician Day.

Overall, our speakers highlighted the importance of practicing cultural competency and humility, and how their experiences shape their patient interactions.

On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, from 7:00 PM- 8:15 PM ET, NHMA hosted our Cultural Competence & the Future of Healthcare Workforce Webinar supported by Johnson & Johnson. Key points covered included providing quality, culturally sensitive, & holistic care to underrepresented communities with limited access to healthcare.

With quality of care starting in the medical education system, physicians and members of the medical school faculty discussed how curricula focused on understanding the cultural backgrounds of patients can engage patients more effectively and provide better care for Hispanic and other underserved communities.
